8 killed at migrant shelter in Brownsville, Texas
On the morning of May 7, 2023, an unnamed individual driving a gray Range Rover SUV collided with a group of asylum seekers waiting for a bus outside the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, a shelter in Brownsville, Texas.
The collision claimed the lives of eight individuals who had spent the night at the shelter and were en route to downtown Brownsville, with nine others requiring hospitalization.
Despite eyewitness accounts, the details surrounding the incident remain unclear as the investigation continues. The fatal tragedy occurred only five miles away from the migrant encampments in Matamoros, Mexico, where thousands await the expiration of Title 42 on May 11.
The process of accumulation has undergone a downward trajectory. State and capital formations, once viewed as industrial and classically capitalist powers, have been forced to adopt colonialist strategies no longer driven exclusively by the rationale of wage discipline but rather by the logic of colonial domination.
As the US confronts its national decline, divisions along racial, differential citizenship and ethnic lines become more pronounced. Those who feel alienated from the state are prone to distance themselves further, while "those seeking purification will serve as unpaid deputies1."
We express our deep concern and indignation at the severity of the tragedy, undeniably linked to the growing anti-refugee sentiment disseminated by conservative propaganda. We affirm our unwavering commitment to shedding light on this issue, standing in solidarity with those who have been forcibly displaced, surviving the cruel conditions at the US-Mexico border.
